Is the IDP program a punishment for people convicted of DWI? Is the program beneficial to both the person convicted and the state ?
The person who has to do it considers it to be an additional punishment. It’s another sanction. In the eyes of the court and the Department of Motor Vehicles, it’s an educational series class. It’s seven classes to learn about the pitfalls and perils of drinking and driving.
Keep in mind, it is not illegal to drink and drive. It is just illegal to have a certain amount of alcohol in your blood system which impairs your ability to operate a motor vehicle. The physiological and emotional aspects will come out in a lot of classes. It’s not a bad thing. It is an additional, necessary thing somebody has to do to get their license back.
