Initial Arraignment

Interviewer: When you work with a client, what happens during your initial arrangement? What are some of the things that you try to get done?

Attorney: From the client, the first thing we like to do is discuss getting them out of custody by showing that the person has some sort of connections or ties to the community and that they’re not at flight risk. Of course, there are some of our clients who, because they’re homeless or because they’re sick or any other scenario, sometimes we work out that they can stay in custody, because now they can get proper medical attention and they have a roof over their heads. Talk to the client and learn what’s in the client’s best interest. Get them out of custody, see what we can do in the way of getting rid of the case, and try to get people to not have a criminal record at the end of the day so they can move forward with their lives. Hopefully, one day, they will no longer be prostitutes or they will no longer be soliciting prostitutes. They’ll be employed and they’ll be an active member of society with no criminal record. That’s a big thing as well.

Preferred Cases

Interviewer: What kind of cases do you like to take personally, in regard to prostitution cases? Which ones do you take, and what are some of the challenges that you face on a typical case that you prefer to take?

Attorney: Prostitution cases? I like the ones that there is the sting and the client is a poor guy girl who answered the advertisement, because I find that we all call that a setup. If you go in and you ask me to commit a crime, is that fair? You advertise for me to get a massage and I’m responding to get a massage. If you didn’t advertise, if you didn’t come out looking for me, I wouldn’t have found you. I wouldn’t be doing this crime. For a lot of our clients that are stuck in that scenario, from our position, didn’t do anything wrong.

I enjoy taking on the government. I think that the government sometimes is way too big and way too involved in our daily lives and if it was illegal to get a massage, then they wouldn’t give licenses for massages and there would not be massage parlors. If you’re going to advertise to have sex, and somebody answers that, how do you deny that? But if somebody advertises for a massage or an escort and the client responds to that advertisement looking for a massage or an escort and gets wrongfully arrested, that’s where I like to help people out and defend those cases and go after the government for what they did.

Internet & Social Media

Interviewer: Have you ever dealt with people who genuinely just didn’t know that that person was a prostitute? It’s like, “I thought I was going to go and hook up with somebody and have a couple of drinks and see where the night led us,” but then they get caught in a sting operation. Have you ever seen cases like that?

Attorney: Sure, because people go out and they look at Craigslist, which is just on the Internet. They can look on Facebook. There are people who come from out of town, and like you said, businessmen who are here who are maybe just looking for somebody to have dinner with. They’re looking for somebody to talk to, somebody to have a drink with, but they’re not looking to have sex with them, and then next thing you know, these people get arrested. That’s the same thing. What did they do that was wrong? If it’s a problem, why are we allowing that on the Internet? Then you get a free speech argument. Our scenario is, of course if you’re there looking for sex and you’re getting sex and everything else, the case gets a little more difficult.

My feeling is there’s a defense to every single case. Sometimes you just have to look a little deeper for it. For the innocent person who’s caught up in the web, those are the people who really need a lot of help, and those are my favorite ones – the challenge cases, the David and Goliath cases. Those are the fun cases to really help people and be successful with those cases.
